I'm Alasdair Campbell, a Graphic Designer based in Altrincham. For over thirteen years I was the in-house Designer for a leading recruitment firm in Manchester city centre. Then in October 2017 I decided I wanted to be self-employed and try freelancing, so that I could challenge myself with a wider variety of projects.

Why choose to work with a freelance Graphic Designer?

For small to medium-sized businesses who don’t have an in-house Graphic Designer, and are reluctant to pay the extremely high hourly rates of design agencies, working with a freelance Designer makes a lot of sense.

Unlike agencies, you are able to easily book hours as and when you need, and I can complete your design work very efficiently when required. Agencies very rarely accommodate last minute requests for artwork, and if they do they’ll charge a significant premium for doing so. You can book the hours you need when you need them, or I am happy to work on a retainer basis. I can guarantee you a fixed number of hours per week or month. This is easier to budget for and gives you peace of mind that all your design requirements will be met.

Working with me makes life easier for you. I take care of everything and work with other suppliers to ensure the whole design process runs smoothly. There really is no need for you to know what an EPS file is or why your printer is asking for ‘bleed’.

Working with me means you’re dealing directly with the Designer and not an Account Manager. I’m very passionate about what I do and have a rare eye for detail – I’m a perfectionist so you’ll get consistently high-quality designs time after time.

I’ve worked in an environment where tight deadlines are the norm, so I can usually complete any urgent requests within a few hours. I’ll also reply to emails within an hour and be available to speak to you at any time.

Creative professionals often seem to speak a different language, but I’ll explain everything I do in plain English. I can also advise you if you’re considering a rebrand, even if it’s just updating your logo. I’m an expert at building a brand that works for your business and your customers. Choosing the right colours and fonts, for example, is crucial to the way your business is perceived and your visual identity helps you stand out from your competitors. Simplicity works best but it isn’t always easy to achieve.

There are other things I can help you with that aren’t often in the domain of a Graphic Designer. I can redesign your Word document templates, Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint templates. Or if you have an important presentation to do I can create a bespoke set of slides.

I can also design beautiful wedding stationery and have it printed on a very wide variety of high quality paper. Whether you want traditional, modern or quirky you shouldn’t have to pay a small fortune.

I’m also a very competent photographer and I can take great photos to use in your designs – images that only you will have. Don’t waste money on buying stock images, and don’t waste time trying to find images that are actually suitable for you and your business.

If you need corporate headshots, for LinkedIn perhaps, I can do that too. I enjoy taking photos of people and have lots of experience with putting them at ease and getting images they're happy with. I specialise in working well with those who tell me "I hate getting my photo taken..."!

I also do a lot of product photography for some clients, for their websites or Amazon stores, and this has been a great success - and also saved them a fortune. Ask me for more information and I’ll let you know if I can assist you with your own products.

You can see that I offer a very broad range of services and I can assist with almost anything - I rarely tell a potential client “no”!

How my graphic design process works.

The creative process begins with you - I will ask lots of questions and listen to your answers, and quickly understand your business, culture, brand values and customers. We will discuss your budget and the timescales we're working to. I will prepare a detailed quote and a timeline for completing key stages of the project.

I will interpret very clearly your needs and establish the best way to visually communicate your message to your target audience and impact them in a positive way. I will do lots of research and develop some concepts for you to review.

When I've completed the first draft artwork my proofs are sent to you via email in JPEG or PDF formats. We will then discuss the designs and if you'd like any changes then I'll use your feedback to create a second draft. So once you are happy with a concept I’ll develop and refine it until it's complete.

When you've signed off the final drafts I'll prepare the artwork and send you all the files you'll need. These will be in any formats you require - for your website, for a printer or for your staff to use where appropriate. If you want me to liaise with any third parties I'll be happy to do so.
